Kompaan Bier: Unveiling The Hague's Craft Beer Gem!

Roy Zwolsman

Founded on friendship and shared passion, Kompaan began as a modest brewery in The Hague. Jeroen and Jasper, the founders, brought their modern approach to craft beer to life, with 'Kompaan' symbolizing their close bond.

The Early Years

In 2010, Jeroen and Jasper started experimenting in their kitchen, and after two years, their first beer, the Bondgenoot, was born.

The First Steps into the Market (2012)

In 2012, Kompaan introduced its first beers to the market, including the refreshing blond, Kompaan 20 (Bondgenoot), which quickly sold out. This marked the beginning of the core range with beers like the 070 Kameraad and the Kompaan 45 Vrijbuiter.

Growth and Festivals (2013)

As the brewery grew, Jasper was able to work full-time at Kompaan in 2013. The core range expanded with beers like Kompaan 58 Handlanger and Kompaan 39 Bloedbroeder. The first festival, Kompaan 'bierFASTival,' took place at F.A.S.T Surfdorp.

Move to Binckhorst (2014)

In 2014, Kompaan moved to Binckhorst in The Hague, bringing a period of growth and collaborations. The range expanded further with seasonal beers and unique creations.

New Location and Crowdfunding (2015)

In 2015, Kompaan moved to its current location on Saturnusstraat. A successful crowdfunding campaign funded a craft beer bar next to the brewery. On August 20, 2015, Kompaan officially opened its doors.

Expansion and Beer Festivals (2016)

In 2016, Kompaan started building a larger brewery. The year also included the introduction of new beer festivals, such as the Bondgenoot Festival and Bloedbroeder Craft Beer Gathering.

International Recognition (2017-2018)

The "Foreign Legion" beer line was launched in 2017, with award-winning beers like Johnny Dogface and Joey Greenhorn. In 2018, Kompaan won international awards and reached new heights.

Awards and Quality (2019)

2019 brought recognition for quality, with gold medals for Joey Greenhorn IPA and the Bloedbroeder Imperial Stout. Handlanger was named the world's best Double IPA at the World Beer Awards.

2020 and Beyond

Despite the challenges of 2020, Kompaan experienced triumphs and built a strong bond with the community. In 2021 and 2022, Kompaan opened new bars, achieved record revenue, and was recognized at the Dutch Beer Challenge.
