Where does IPA stand for?
IPA stands for Indian Pale Ale. This classic craft beer style is characterized by its bitterness and fruity notes. The style has a special history, from which the name is derived and already has many variants.
History
The origins of Indian Pale Ale (IPA) date back to the 19th century, when Pale Ale beers shipped to India proved unable to withstand the long journey from England to the east. In order for the Pale Ale beers to last during the long journey, brewers added more hops to the beer. In addition to the longer shelf life, this also gave a characteristic strong and hoppy taste to this style. Besides that, the hops added extra aromas to the IPA, such as the fruity aromas of citrus fruits. Because these aromas fade with time and are an important part of the taste, it is important not to store an IPA for too long.
Variants
Since the original IPA, several varieties have emerged, each with their own unique flavor profile and character.
Double IPA (DIPA):
DIPAs are characterized by a more intense hop bitterness and a fuller taste. These beers usually have a higher alcohol content making them perfect for those looking for a strong, flavorful experience. |
Triple IPA (TIPA):
TIPAs go one step further than DIPAs and offer an even more intense hop experience. With a higher alcohol content and strong hop aromas, the taste experience is taken to a higher level. |
Quadruple IPA (QIPA):
QIPAs take hop intensity and alcohol content to new heights. These beers are bold, powerful and full of flavour. |
New England IPA (NEIPA):
NEIPAs are distinguished by the use of New England hops and offer an explosion of tropical hop aromas. This style is characterized by its cloudiness. The beers are juicy and have a silky smooth texture that makes them irresistible to lovers of fruity flavours. |
Double Dry-Hopped IPA (DDH IPA):
DDH IPAs undergo multiple hop infusions during the brewing process. The result is an IPA with an exceptionally full taste. |
Session IPA (SIPA):
SIPAs are characterized as a lighter alternative to the regular IPA with a reduced bitterness. The beer has a lower alcohol percentage and is less hoppy and bitter. The fruit flavors are also less present. |
